This study investigates the impact of extreme weather events such as heat and cold waves on mortality rates in Japan; and the impact of changes in energy prices on the temperature-mortality relationship through averting behavior. Our identification strategy relies on exogenous variations in energy prices arising from nuclear power plants shutdowns after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011. We find that extremely hot and cold days increase mortality rates in Japan. In particular, males are affected by cold temperatures while females by hot temperatures.
