This paper analyses whether and to what extent subjective expectations of receiving an inheritance in the future will affect the working and saving attitudes of American households, approaching retirement. Bequests should matter, as wealth does, on labour choices. We argue that subjective expectations of future wealth endowments through bequests could also matter in choices on how intensively participate into the labour market.
